GearUp s.r.l. technical collaboration activities

GearUp s.r.l. provided technical consultancy within the PON – DIPROVEL project “Technological demonstrator of an aeronautical hybrid propulsion system for applications on light aircraft” for the design of the parallel hybrid system with a maximum power of 135 kW, composed of a PMSM EMRAX 268 electric motor LV and a CMD 22 spark ignition heat engine for aeronautical application on a Cessna 337 aircraft. As part of this project GearUp s.r.l. carried out design and mechanical coupling activities of the hybrid propulsion system through a unidirectional bearing placed between the thermal and electric motor Figure 1.

GearUp s.r.l. developed a mathematical model of the propulsion system in Matlab/Simulink (Figure 2) and subsequently validated through experimentally obtained data.

Furthermore, a consumption control and minimization strategy based on the Equivalent Consumption Minization Strategy (ECMS) algorithm was developed.

The strategy is capable of autonomously controlling two engines, the electric one and the thermal one, minimizing fuel consumption and respecting the desired mission requirement. The algorithm was written in Matlab/Simulink and was tested in real-time on the real physical system in the engine test room.
