What is meant by SMEs?

SMEs, or Small and Medium Enterprises, are businesses characterized by a limited number of employees and an annual turnover or balance sheet total that falls within specific parameters. The exact definitions may vary from country to country, but in general, SMEs are considered smaller businesses than large enterprises.

At the European Union level, the definition of small and medium-sized enterprises is outlined in Recommendation no. 2003/361/EC of the European Commission, implemented in Italy with Ministerial Decree of 18 April 2005.

The classification of companies in the European Union is based on three main criteria: the number of employees, the annual turnover and the annual balance sheet total. This distinction is crucial, since company size determines access to public incentives, state aid and contributions through subsidized finance instruments and tenders.

SMEs are categorized as follows:

  • Small businesses: fewer than 50 employees, with an annual turnover or annual balance sheet total not exceeding 10 million euros;
  • Medium-sized enterprises: fewer than 250 employees, with an annual turnover not exceeding 50 million euros or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding 43 million euros;
  • Micro-enterprises: fewer than 10 employees, with an annual turnover or annual balance sheet total not exceeding 2 million euros.

SMEs play a significant role in the economy, contributing to job creation and economic growth. Usually, they are divided into different categories based on the number of employees or turnover and can operate in various sectors, from manufacturing to services.

Thanks to the experience and skills of the internal working groups, which are formed from time to time based on specific technical needs, GearUp is able to propose the most suitable solutions to achieve the company’s innovative technical objectives within the expected timescales.
